Now in its 19th year, Rumi’s Caravan is a 100-percent, volunteer-run group of poets and community leaders who believe in the power of poetry to enlighten the human condition. Its mission is to awaken delight in the heart and to restore the soul of the world through ecstatic poetry and music. The longevity of Rumi’s Caravan is directly related to Rumi himself. “Why is the 13th-century Persian mystic, Jellaludin Rumi, the best-selling poet in 21st-century America?” asks Producer and Co-Founder Larry Robinson. “Probably because his free-wheeling, God-intoxicated poems cut to the heart of the human experience, transcending all dogma or ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing,” says Robinson, answering his own question. Artistic Director Kay Crista explains the popularity of Rumi’s Caravan this way: “With ecstatic poetry, a potency of feeling slips in with the words, bypasses the brain, pierces the heart, and enters directly into the soul … and we are uplifted, effortlessly, like grace,” she says.
