Chico High boys, girls complete sweep of River Valley ahead of EAL play | Local roundup

The Chico High boys basketball team defeated River Valley 53-40 on Monday at the Panther Pit at Chico High.

Chico led 18-15 and outscored River Valley 35-25 in the second half to secure the win.

Alex Padilla led the Chico High (9-6) with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Rashad Samuels had 12 points, with 10 coming in the second half, and Odin Nielsen scored 11 points.

Jordan Lana scored seven points. Panthers head coach Abraham Simmons said Lana came off the bench and provided his team with a lot of energy. Phil Bernandez led Chico High in rebounds with eight and steals with five.

Chico High opens Eastern Athletic League play at 8 p.m. Thursday at home against Foothill.

Prep girls basketball

Chico High 66, River Valley 23: Chico High defeated River Valley in River Valley on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Taylee Clements led Chico in scoring with 12 points, Campbell Vieg scored 10 points and Sophie Sims scored eight points.

Vieg led Chico with eight rebounds. Brooke Huffman had four rebounds, and Vieg and Maddelena Cavina had four steals each.

Chico High (11-3) was scheduled to conclude non-league play at home Tuesday against West Valley, but the game was canceled due to Chico High entering COVID-19 protocols.

The Panthers are scheduled to play next at 8 p.m. Friday at Foothill to open EAL play, but Panthers head coach Sean Conrad said this week’s games are still up in the air.
