Chico High tennis continues dominant season with NorCal Final win

The Chico High tennis team has been dominant throughout the fall 2021 season. The Panthers defeated University Prep in the NorCal Finals on Wednesday to advance to the Northern Section State tournament, which will be held Nov. 19 in the Sacramento area. Chico High was the winner of the Division I tournament and U-Prep won the Division II tournament. The opponent for Chico High will be announced Friday or Saturday.

In the match Wednesday, Chico High suffered its first individual loss of the season. The Panthers’ No. 3 Julia McGarva lost to U-Prep’s Maggie Barth. Chico High coach Randy Agnew complimented the play of Barth and said she was “totally on her game Wednesday.”

Paige Sitanggang, Sydney Vaughn, Skylar Granlund, Kaylee Morehead and Clare Schaefer all won in singles for Chico High to claim the victory.

In a separate tournament, Vaughn will face her opponent from Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Northern Section tournament on Friday in a quarterfinal matchup. The winner will play in the semifinals and compete in the finals for the “queen of the section.” Also still competing in the Northern Section tournament will be Sitanggang against Shasta, who will play the winner of Vaughn and U-Prep’s Vianna Medina. Chico High also has two doubles teams competing in the Northern Section tournament, including the teams of Vaughn and Sitanggang, and Skylar Granlund and Aubrey Layland.
