CHICO — The Chico Police Department’s investigation into the Oct. 7 shooting in the City Plaza has turned up some new information since it began.
According to a press release issued Thursday by the department, surveillance footage was recovered of the area of the plaza near where the shooting took place and showed a vehicle, potentially driven by the suspect.
Additionally, the release reported that at around 8:40 a.m. on the same day of the shooting, hours later, police dispatch received calls of a possible suicide by gunshot in an alleyway at the south end of Chico.
Officers arrived at that incident to find the individual dead in what police believe to have been a suicide, the release said.
Along with the body, police located the same vehicle seen in the surveillance footage.
“Detectives are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting at the City Plaza, but believe the two incidents are connected,” the release said. “This investigation is still on-going, and we will not disclose the identity of the deceased subject until our investigation is completed.”
While the identity of the deceased individual has not been released by the department, the release said the person was not from Chico and might have come from out of state.
Meanwhile, the person who was shot in the plaza has been released from the hospital.
