The Chico Fire Department announced Friday night that a young girl died in a fire Friday afternoon. According to fire officials, at about 1:08 p.m. early Friday afternoon, its dispatchers received a call of a confirmed residential structure fire at 421 Oak St.
According to fire officials, the initial reports said flames could be seen coming from the windows of the structure, and when crews arrived they found a working fire on the first floor of a two-story duplex. Officials say that crews began aggressively attacking the fire and started checking for victims.
Crews were reportedly informed that there were two victims trapped inside, in its primary search, fire personnel reportedly found a juvenile female age yet to be determined, unconscious.
That victim was later determined to be a fatality, and a secondary search by crews found no other victims. The name of the victim is being withheld until family members can be contacted.
Both Chico Fire and police investigators processed the scene but had no origin or cause to release as the investigation continues.
