Letter: Bonhoeffer’s 5 laws

Stupidity is defined as “behavior that shows lack of good sense or judgment.”

Every one of us behaves or has behaved stupidly at one time or another.

Nevertheless, there is a large contingent of people who wallow in and have perfected stupidity into an art form.

I am of course referring to modern day Fox-Noise- brainwashed conservatives, including global warming deniers, anti-vaxxers, Neo-Nazis, Trumpers and kindred deplorables.

Trump’s greatest accomplishment was to unleash the pent up forces of stupidity in this country, thus endangering not only America but the entire world.

Please do not take my word for it but heed the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “5 laws of stupidity,” here is an excerpt about what he wrote regarding the Nazis:

“…Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed – in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical – and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack. For that reason, greater caution is called for when dealing with a stupid person than with a malicious one … ”

Any similarities perceptive readers may notice between what Bonhoeffer wrote about the Nazis and today’s prevailing conservative beliefs are not coincidental.
