Letter: In appreciate of a cleaner climate

Kudos to Gov. Newsom for starting the process of preventing new filthy fossil fuel extraction close to our vulnerable citizens (Chico E-R, Oct 23, A2). We should all be protected from the filth the wells generate and the sickness they cause.

I also applaud this newspaper’s running of the AP story on getting electric school buses to replace dirty diesel ones nationwide. Why should getting to school be a hazard to our kids’ health, from breathing diesel fumes? Perhaps the Chico E-R should follow up with a local story about school districts around here? You could focus on how many have been replaced in each district, the long term economic benefits (electric has much lower maintenance and “fuel” costs, which makes electric cheaper than diesel over the bus’ lifetime), and the known statistics around fewer childhood illnesses (esp. respiratory).

Let’s all applaud CUSD for the buses they’ve replaced so far.

Finally, a message to our youth: You can do more than most adults to advance this health and climate protection move by speaking to your school board. To get guidance and support, reach out to our local Citizens Climate Lobby, Chico-Redding chapter.
