Letter: In defense of Supervisor Lucero

Dear Butte County Voters, I, for one, cannot sit silent after reading Peter Durfee’s slanderous accusations about Supervisor Debra Lucero.  I know his statements are untrue because I was at that meeting when the maps were being discussed.  These false statements, coming from a local police officer and himself, a candidate for supervisor, stink of dirty politics.

Everyone can go and read her Oct 23 Facebook post mentioned by Mr. Durfee.  You will see quite a detailed explanation by Supervisor Lucero of how redistricting works, showing just how knowledgeable she is, and how informing the public is at the forefront of all she does.  She poses valid questions and comments about defined neighborhoods and communities that should be kept together, and calls out what certainly looks like a blatant attempt to gerrymander Butte County districts in favor of ag.  It is a great service that she is calling this out.  It’s a legal issue and it’s her job to do so.

Supervisor Lucero makes her case without accusation, but with honesty, dignity and integrity.  Contrary to the flagrant accusation of self-interest, Supervisor Lucero is one of our most knowledgeable, hardworking, and fully engaged public servants, working tirelessly and passionately in the best interests of all of Butte County.  She stands up to the bully pulpit and we are so lucky to have her.  I hope others who were at this meeting will register their observations by writing a letter to the E-R.
