Bob Dole was a hero and a patriot. His death on December 5th has left America worse off. Biden was right to call him a “giant of our history.” This idea, that we are “walking in the footsteps of giants,” rings especially true for me this week. Bob Dole and I both served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division: Bob Dole fought in the Italian Campaign during World War Two, and I fought in Iraq half a century later. Medically discharged from the Army after being seriously wounded in action, Bob Dole continued his service to his country in the Kansas House of Representatives, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate for nearly 50 years.
We need more leaders like him. Senator Dole, and the “greatest generation” he personified, will be missed.
