Letter: Supervisor speaks out on disparaging comments, gerrymandering

For the record, I do not encourage disparaging comments on my Facebook page. I monitor comments as best as I can with nearly 5,000 friends. Any Nazi inferences are abhorrent to me.

It appears this “Nazi reference” is a new line of political attack by my challenger – Chico Police Officer Peter Durfee – regarding the Redistricting Process.

What he doesn’t acknowledge are the 2,038 community comments; the attendance by dozens and dozens of people at 10 community meetings where their testimony was ignored; the 900 letters requesting Map A7 (creating two urban districts) compared to the 73 letters requesting Supervisor Tod Kimmelshue’s Map A5-C with two westside ag districts.

Let’s remember Butte County paid $80,000 in taxpayer funds for a professional to draw maps. Instead of adopting the consultants’ map; we adopted a map drawn by a supervisor.

People are concerned when democracy doesn’t work. People are concerned when their voices are not heard. And they’re certainly concerned when politicians begin to pick their voters instead of voters picking their politicians.

There are laws prohibiting the drawing of districts utilizing party registration information which we now know Josh Cook, chief of staff for Senator Brian Dahle (R-Redding) did – at 1:58 p.m. – on a work day.

This is the very definition of gerrymandering and against provisions of the Fair Maps Act. This is not “dangerous rhetoric” but simply restating what occurred.

Orson Welles said, “The further a society drifts from the truth the more it will hate those who speak it.”
