The 49ers head into Sunday with an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth, provided they can knock off the Texans and the Carolina Panthers can upset the New Orleans Saints. Should the 49ers win Sunday but not earn a postseason berth they can still secure a playoff spot by beating the Rams in next Sunday’s regular season finale.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan was holding out hope quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could play despite nursing an injured right thumb, but all signs pointed to rookie quarterback Trey Lance getting his second career start.

With a rookie quarterback, the 49ers’ final regular season home game could very turn into a ground assault. The 49ers flexed their muscles in back-to-back wins in late November while pounding both the Rams and Jaguars — they ran for a combined 327 yards while notching 44 and 42 carries, respectively.

After missing the last three games, rookie running back Elijah Mitchell (knee) will make his return despite being listed as questionable.

Houston, meanwhile, is looking to play spoiler for the second consecutive week. The Texans, led by former Stanford quarterback Davis Mills, upset the Chargers 41-29 last week. Mills completed 21 of 27 passes for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory.
