Sunday is the fourth anniversary of the day the 49ers traded a second-round draft pick for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. It’s fair to wonder if Sunday will also mark the last game Garoppolo starts for the 49ers?
Of immediate concern is how the 49ers can fix what’s ailing their offense during a four-game losing streak. San Francisco’s third-down efficiency has been abysmal — it ranks 30th in the league with a 31.4 conversion rate. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has been bush this week figuring out third-down solutions.
One thing that will help is that Garoppolo won’t have to deal with former Raiders staff pass rusher Khalil Mack, who will sit out the game with a foot injury. Unfortunately, the 49ers will also be missing some key defensive players Sunday. Defensive ends Dee Ford (concussion) and Dee Ford (concussion), defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (calf) and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair (concussion) have all been declared out of the game. Defensive end Samson Ebukam (ankle) may also miss the game.
The Bears will be playing the game without their head coach as coach Matt Nagy was still on the COVID protocol on Sunday. He’s been away from the team all week and special teams coach Chris Tabor will take over head coaching duties.
