For Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, launching ill-advised throws on Monday Night Football seems to run in the family.
Stafford’s wife, Kelly, caused a stir by throwing a pretzel at a trash-talking 49ers fan at Levi’s Stadium during the Rams’ 31-10 loss to San Francisco on Monday, a defeat that featured two costly interceptions thrown by her husband.
After getting called out on social media by a fan who claimed to witness her fury-filled fling, Kelly Stafford apologized for putting an ugly twist on the Rams’ embarrassing night.
“Who do you think you are to do such a thing?” the witness asked Kelly on Instagram. “Show some class and support your husband and his new team with grace please.”
“I’m an idiot,” Kelly said. “He was saying a bunch of things that were aggressive towards our crew but zero excuse. I tried to apologize, but in the end, knew I was wrong.”
It didn’t matter that Matthew Stafford’s troubles on Monday Night Football continued – he now has just an 86.8 passer rating with almost as many interceptions (12) as touchdowns (15) while his teams have won just five of 12 prime time games. His wife made it clear she has his back.
“Will always stand up for my guy and everyone I love, but obviously needed to do it completely different! I’m embarrassed too!” Kelly wrote to the fan. “Sorry you had to witness me in my weak moment!”
The woman told TMZ that security officials at Levi’s diffused the situation by escorting Kelly and her crew to a different seating area.
Presumably, Kelly Stafford also had her pretzel privileges revoked for the rest of the night.
