The Pleasant Valley boys basketball team opened the McDonald’s Winter Classic on Thursday night with a 71-29 victory over Stagg High School of Stockton.
Chase Mitchell led the Vikings with 14 points and seven rebounds. Ned Joyce scored 12 points and collected seven rebounds as well, and Gabe Garretson came off the bench and provided PV with 12 points.
Bryson Snelling and Noah Thomas added eight points each.
PV (5-1) continues play in its home tournament with games at 5:30 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
Chico High 75, Pioneer 54: Chico High defeated Pioneer of Woodland in the Marysville tournament Thursday night. The Panthers got out to an early 30-12 lead after the first quarter and took a 42-26 lead into halftime before holding on for the victory.
Alex Padilla led Chico in scoring with 15 points, Rashad Samuels scored 12 points, Phil Bernandez scored 10 points, and Jaiden Henry and Odin Nielsen scored eight points each.
Chico High (3-5) plays next at 5 p.m. Friday in the semifinals of the Marysville tournament, before returning home to play Yuba City at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Chico against Yuba City.
Prep girls basketball
Pleasant Valley 40, Calaveras 39: Pleasant Valley’s Caitlyn Vickery made two free-throws with nine seconds left Thursday night to give PV the victory in the Folsom tournament.
Maddux Wilson led PV with nine points, all coming on 3-point attempts. Vickery, Nia Billyos and AJ Gambol scored seven points each for PV.
Pleasant Valley (5-4) continues tournament play on Friday and Saturday in the Folsom tournament.
Prep boys soccer
Willows 5, Anderson 2: Willows was led to a road win Wednesday afternoon by two second-half goals from Damian Placencia. Jael Bibriesca scored one goal for the Honkers on a rebound following a corner kick, Edwin Salazar scored one goal with a header and Alejandro Jimenez scored the final goal for Willows.
Willows goalkeeper David Ortega made eight saves, including one save on a one-on-one opportunity in the first half.
Willows (1-1, 0-1 Sacramento Valley League) plays next at 3:15 p.m. Monday at Hamilton.
Prep girls soccer
Gridley 3, Pierce 0: Gridley defeated Pierce in Arbuckle on Thursday night.
Maria Espinoza, Rafaela Anguiano and Natalie Estrada scored one goal each for the Bulldogs.
Danika Montero preserved the shutout in net for Gridley, and Gridley coach Mark Canfield said Haven Counihan played outstanding defense in front of Montero.
Gridley (2-1-1, 0-1 Butte View League) plays next at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Live Oak.
